'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tributes At OT And In Munich

Both Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern Munich president and Christian Ude, Munich mayor were present as 400 Manchester United fans paid tribute to the Munich disaster's victims 50 years after the crash.

The fans gathered in Trudering, a suburb of the Bavarian city as it was where the tragedy had occurred.

'February 6, 1958 was a black day in the history of Manchester United, but also for football in general,' Rummenigge said.

'I'm proud to be a fan of Manchester United. People in England say God save the Queen. Today, I say God save Manchester United.'

The names of the victims were read out and of course the song 'Flowers of Manchester' was sang. And it wasn't only United fans there: Munich residents came and expressed their amazement that our fans still keep visiting the place despite that the vast majority of them never saw these players play.

I think they should not be amazed...

Thousands gathered at Old Trafford, too, of course. The memorial could be heard on the outside and there were fans who spent the whole day around the stadium... Of course most supporters went straight to the southeast corner of the stadium: I'm sure I don't need to tell you what is there...

Relatives and friends of the victims were also to be seen but of course they took part in the memorial inside Old Trafford. Chants were heard and candles were lit, many waved flags.

They play on in our memories.
