Wenger Wanted Ronaldo - So What?

The English media have fallen over their feet to report that Arsene Wenger wanted to sign Ronaldo before he was taken by Fergie to Old Trafford.

Here is the story in short. Arsene Wenger revealed Ronaldo was at Arsenal before he joined United.

'He was here much earlier - he could tell you that if he wants.

'Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz moved and that made it very difficult.'

That's it. He was there, had a look around then signed for us. Why is it such a big deal, I don't know. Wenger himself added that he does not want to create a story out of it.

The fact is that he was interested in a brilliant young talent. Hardly surprising, I would not be shocked if Real Madrid, Barcelona, Milan et al claimed they had all tried to sign before he joined us. He's a special player and was a special talent at the age of 18.

Did Wenger try to claim credit for unearthing Ronaldo? If that's the case, it would be quite childish, something I would not like to accuse Wenger with though I would not put it past him.

Ronaldo was a great talent, credit to Fergie and Queiroz for turning him into a goalscorer with a hitherto unheard level of consistency. Only Ruud's 2002/03 season comes close to what Ronaldo has achieved so far this term. And what if Wenger tried to sign him? We should be even happier that he ended up at us!

If you read that interview fully you will see that Wenger isn't trying to get any credit for 'unearthing' Ronaldo, infact he talks about how well he has developed since he first saw him, which is actually giving the man utd coaching team credit, so I hardly think the ridiculous dig is called for!! All the big clubs around europe know about the best kids nowdays so there really isn't any story!!

The real story is how Man Utd are hijacking deals & buying kids like Nani/Anderson just to stop others having them (admitted by Fergie), which actually shows just how scared Ferguson is of competition.

typical wenger, so up his own arse he beleives all the hype that he is gods gift to football, a master of youth development and a genius at unearthing talent. fact is, ferguson had been doing it long before wenger and he still is, and ronaldo is just another example of that - the worlds best player signed when he was just 18 by united - and wenger hates it!!! And Ronaldo is a very good player, but he ain't the best in the world. Messi and Kaka are better than him. Just cos he does a few tricks against lower league opposition, in a league not renowned for its defending, doesn't make him the best player. I can't wait to see your sad pathetic United faces when he goes to Real Madrid - cos he definitely is!

when i look at ronaldo i see a player who does loads of step overs and gets hyped for it. he is good but look at how messi dribbles past players with ease in tight spaces. id say messi and kaka are above him.

The creature who posted above is one sad, sick, little man. I'd say Ronaldo is probably the best player in the world. I'm not even a fan of any of the big clubs in England (Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal)

Kaka? Maybe. Messi? No way. Good with dribbling but stronger defenders mark him out of the game so easily that's unreal. He's good in the Spanish league where he's allowed time and space but no surprise he did even less in the Champions League than Ronaldo. And his scoring rate is nowhere near Ronaldo's so it's obvious who is the better player right now.

united4life, "fact is, ferguson had been doing it long before wenger." A slight error, that should have read, "Brian Kidd was doing it in the mid nineties but Fergie has unearthed bugger all, instead relying on a massive chequebook."
