'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fergie Not Inspired By Blues

Sir Alex Ferguson laughed off claims that his side had been inspired to victory at Fratton Park after Chelsea's humiliation at Middlesbrough.

Ferguson: 'We had a job to do. Our record here in the last two years has been terrible - we haven't scored goal - so the important thing was to win the game.

'What we want to do is win matches and if that takes us to a higher position then we can keep it going and it will give us a chance.

'In a league of this nature, with the competitiveness of it, you are going to drop points and you have to recover from them. We have to hope Chelsea have a bad spell.

'We had very good first half. We got careless in the second half but, in fairness to Portsmouth, they never gave in.

'It was an incredible [first] goal from Ronaldo. The boy is capable of that. He scored two goals last week (against Fulham) and two this week - that is terrific going.

'He is capable of 15-20 goals a season.'
