Is Ferdinand The Best In The World?

Wayne Rooney reckons Rio Ferdinand is the world's best defender at the moment.

Rio excelled in the 1-0 win at Anfield and his performance certainly deserves praise. Yet Rooney took it one step further than simple praise.

'Vida and Rio were brilliant for us," he added.

"I think Rio is probably the best defender in the world at the moment. He's been doing really well for us. The whole defence and the whole team is defending well."

Yeah, I know, the usual self-hype. But it's worth some debate. Do you agree with him? Rio, with his brilliant skills but lapses of concentration, is better than Nesta, Terry, Gallas, Puyol, Cannavaro?

Is the world's best defender, not on abilities, but on current form?

Tests? I was under the impression he had missed only one. And yes, at the moment he is the best as nobody is performing equal to his level.

I presume this is some sort of Christmas prank? Is this the same Ferdinand who scored an amazing o.g against Portsmouth, the same fella who 'forgot' a drugs test and the same Rio who smashes the ball at old ladies in the crowd whenever he has a temper tantrum? He's not even the best centre half at united.Dont know how he gets a game for england.

yep one own goal against pompey so what? carragher who was responsible for two of chelsea's goals on wednesday is better? no, he's trying and fighting and all that, but skill-wise he's not in the same league as rio. terry is cajoling and bullying but commits much more mistake than what he is criticised for because the media loves him. his only competition is vidic and nesta. i think both are equal to him though different type of players

rio is an idiot.Vidic is far better so is carra and agger and hyypia was.terry and carvalho are better so is nesta, canavarro, milito, puyol, sergio ramos, toure, gallas.he is a smackhead giraffe whod rather be a rapper than a footballer given the choice.

Vieri always said he would play cricket rather than football if he could just earn as much. That did not stop him being a great striker though.
