United Don't Want Veloso

You all remember the wearisome rumours about Miguel Veloso? The Sporting midfielder was praised by Carlos Queiroz but he added that signing him is not a priority.

This last thing appears to have escaped the attention of Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco who launched a scathing attack on our assistant for trying to unsettle the player and labelled him a persona non grata.

Sir Alex Ferguson, however, was nonplussed by it and understandably: as he said, why would he tap up a player who is playing for the club that can be called our feeder club?

'We should respond to these allegations,' he said in the Guardian.

'It's unfortunate that the president has said this, and unfair that he chose Carlos as a target.

Carlos's behaviour is impeccable and their president should retract his comments. We have a good relationship with Sporting and I don't want to see that destroyed.'

He added, in no uncertain terms, that we do not want to sign Veloso and never wanted to. Case closed, I think.

Number of times that Sir Alex Ferguson has been directly accused of making illegal approaches for players: 20+. You'd have to be really naive to think that any big club, including United, is totally clean when it comes to trying to "tap up" players, especially after so many ex-United players (Jaap Stam, etc) have come straight out and said that it happened to them. As to whether Miguel Veloso is wanted by United, well, who knows? One thing's for sure, if you're caught in the act then you'd naturally deny it, wouldn't you? Look at Chelsea/Jose Mourinho/Ashley Cole: guilty as sin, no doubt about it but they all denied it. Nobody admits to the crime, so what makes you so sure that's not what's going on here?
