Jaap Stam Retires

Jaap Stam will call it time on his career later today, according to reports.

The big defender, signed from PSV in 1998, spent three remarkably successful seasons at United. His first culminated in winning the Treble, and it will be difficult for anyone to have a better debut season!

He followed that up by winning two more league titles with the club (by considerable margins it has to be said) but he was unceremoniously dumped after he had published his autobiography which included less than courteous comments about his teammates and the club itself.

He wasn't bad at Lazio, was even better at Milan but struggled to make any real impact at Ajax due to injuries, therefore it seems logical to quit now. However, we must not forget that he was one hell of a defender in his prime, he was tough and it was extremely difficult to get past him. His departure left United seriously vulnerable at the back that time - and that season's 'achievements' assured we won't forget how amazing his contribution had been once.

What a great defender he was. You guys really missed him when he left.
