Ex-United midfielder Paul Ince knows a bit about the holding role in the centre of the park, and he has called on Sven-Goran Eriksson to play Rio Ferdinand in a new position.
Surely the World Cup is not a place to experiment and play a player out of position, but Ince thinks Sir Alex hit the nail on the head when he moved Rio out of defence for the cup tie on Sunday.
Ferdinand was pressed into emergency service alongside Wayne Rooney when Alan Smith pulled up late with injury and couldn't be considered.
Ince: 'I have always said Rio is a fantastic player and he could do that holding role for England. I know there is a question mark over who is going to play centre-half but Rio is good enough to play in that position (midfield) and Sven should be looking at that because the lad is awesome.
'Ledley King played there against Argentina and it didn't really work out for the lad. He can play that role but there are not many about and Rio is the only one who has the discipline to sit in there and set things up.'
