'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Vidic Was Worried

Nemanja Vidic admitted he had believed he would not make it at United after the first couple of months.

The Serbian defender signed for United in January last year but he was struggling during the first few months.

His debut was delayed by his fitness problems, for the Russian season had already ended when we signed him so he was desperately short of match fitness. In April, he started to show some promise but it could not be denied that we saw the real Vidic in September only.

'My first couple of months in England were very difficult,' he said.

'To be honest, I didn't think I had a future in England. I did worry that I wasn't going to make it at Manchester United.

'The football is different in England. In the summer it wasn't that I was scared but I had lost my confidence because of what happened in those first couple of months.

'I missed passes I had never missed before. It was like I had forgotten how to play. But players need to be strong in the head to play at a big club here.'

These quotes came as a bit of surprise for me. Lack of confidence is not something I would instinctly associate with Vidic and it's hard to believe that he was so depressed over the summer. OK, he wasn't that good last season but some of his performances, most notably against Arsenal, were at least promising.

All in all, we must be happy he did not flee!

He's made the difference between 2nd place and first, he's a good old fashioned defender in the Steve Bruce mould, he's ******** quality.
