Carrick Hails Much-Maligned Fletcher

Michael Carrick reveals he doesn't understand why a lot of United supporters keep saying that Fletcher is not good enough.

Neither do I, to be honest but I lauded Fletcher all too often on this pages so this article should not be about me but Carrick.

'I`ve been really impressed by Fletch since I arrived at Old Trafford in the summer - he`s a fantastic midfielder,' he said.

"In fact, in our last two Champions League games against Roma and AC Milan he`s been our best player.

"We`ve a lot of boys like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney who grab the headlines with their goals - but Darren`s contribution shouldn`t be forgotten.

"The job he does in the middle of the park is outstanding and he has been first class for us this season.

"I don`t think he gets the credit he deserves - at United or in Scotland.

"He has been brilliant every time he has played this year and he thrives on big games. The tougher the opponent, the better he is.

"Against Milan he was up against big players like Pirlo, Seedorf and Kaka but he handled it and played well.

"What else can he do to convince people he`s a top player at that level?"

Well said, Michael - though one could ask what else could Carrick do to convince everyone he's a top player? It's a shame that large groups of supporters keep harping about how mediocre they are, oblivious to the fact both played a key part of United getting there where they are now.
