United v Sevilla - Who Do The Stats Favour?

United v Sevilla - Who Do The Stats Favour?

The Champions League takes centre-stage on Tuesday evening when the familiar strains of the anthem will echo around the ground as United prepare to take on Sevilla, in the second-leg of a last-16 tie.

The tie is evenly balanced at 0-0, after the first leg in Spain.

But, before the second-leg, and acknowledging our love of statistics, facts and figures here at Vital Manchester United, we thought we`d delve into the record and form books to see if fortune favours Manchester United when it comes to moving on to the next stage.

We were pleasantly surprised at what we found.

• According to the statistics, 70% of the sides who scrape a 0-0 draw away from home in the first-leg, go through to the next round.

• When it comes to going head-to-head with Spanish sides, in the Champions League, Manchester United have a more than decent record, 9 games have yielded 5 wins, 3 draws and just the 1 defeat.

• Jose Mourinho, has a fine record when it comes to home games in the Champions League, 69 fixtures have generated 48 wins, 14 draws and just 7 losses, although (and you might want to look away now), 5 of those 7 defeats have come against Spanish opposition.

• When it comes to goals, the facts show Manchester United don`t do well when it comes to scoring goals in encounters with Spanish sides, in none of the last 15 games have United scored more than 1 goal, in fact in those games they`ve scored just 7 goals.

So, considering the above, I reckon this game has got 1-0 to Manchester United written all over it.
