Newcastle United 1 Manchester United 0
This afternoon, Manchester United failed to make up any ground on their neighbours Manchester City when they slipped to a narrow defeat at St James Park, against Newcastle United.
It was one of those games where Manchester United will rue the number of chances they missed whilst reflecting on their hosts scoring the one serious chance that fell their way.
Martin Dubravka making his debut for the home side produced an inspired display as Newcastle won for the first time, in the Premier League, at St James Park since October.
The only goal of the game came in the sixty-fifth minute when Matt Ritchie drilled the home after the Manchester United defence had been opened up.
The best chance that fell to United came late-one when Anthony Martial twice saw efforts blocked, on the line, as the pressure mounted.
Dubravka, between the Newcastle posts, produced fine stops to deny Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick.
However, Newcastle could point to an incident, in the first-half, when they cold quite easily have been awarded a penalty when Chris Smalling appear to trip Dwight Gayle.
Despite a frantic finale, Manchester United couldn`t force an equaliser to remain sixteen points behind the runaway leaders Manchester City.
