'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fletcher Realized His Role

Darren Fletcher capped a fine performance by scoring the decisive goal against Charlton on Saturday and grasped the opportunity to stake his claim for a first-team place.

United's much-maligned 23-year-old midfielder is no more than a backup player this season but he impressed me whenever he was called into action. I had said that he would deserve more opportunities but he would not blast the manager for his limited appearances.

'It's disappointing to be only used now and again in 10 to 15-minute cameos but we want to win the league and there are going to be certain games when I'm needed when a different style is required.

'Whether I'll be selected against Italy is a decision for the Scotland manager to make and if he thinks that I've not had enough minutes under my belt then he won't play me.

'If I'm not picked, I'll get behind the team and if I'm asked to come on late on and tighten the game up or whatever then fine.'

if he played better he would get more games although he does look like hes improving

Shame he can't establish himself as a regular as elsewhere he'd be guarenteed first time football regularly. I wonder how long it'll be before he wants a transfer.

i think in a couple of seasons he will realise he needs first team football
