West Brom 1 Manchester United 2

Manchester United took the points on offer in this fixture but were made to fight all the way as West Bromwich Albion made a spirited comeback.

With Manchester City having won on Saturday, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1, it was imperative that Manchester United won today, to close the gap between first and second to eleven points.

United looked to be cruising to victory in a first-half where they were by far the superior side.

The scoring was opened in the 27th minute when Romelu Lukaku was on hand to power a header into the top corner from a cross.

Leading 1-0, the lead was doubled eight minutes later when a shot from Jesse Lingard took a wicked deflection off Ahmed Hegazi to leave Foster in the West Brom goal wrong-footed.

Leading 2-0 at the half-time break it seemed to be only a matter of how many United would win this by.

But, at half-time, the West Brom manager, Alan Pardew, introduced Gareth Barry and suddenly it was a different game.

West Brom looked a far better and balanced side and United had trouble dominating the play as they had done in the first-half.

Pushing to get back into the game, West Brom were rewarded in the 77th minute when following a corner, the United defence failed to clear the ball and Gareth Barry was on hand to stab the ball home.

Suddenly everyone inside the Hawthorns, bar the travelling support, believed the home side could get a point from this fixture, But, whilst there was a lot of hustle and bustle they never managed to create another decent chance and the three points belonged to Manchester United.
