Valencia In Team Of The Week (18/9/17)

Manchester United are represented in the latest Premier League team of the week that has been selected by BBC pundit Garth Crooks.

Actually Garth is now down as a 'Football Analyst' these days, a posh term for a pundit then!

The performance by Antonio Valencia in the four nil victory over Everton at the weekend at Old Trafford was enough to earn them a place in the side alongside the other, in the opinion of the former Spurs striker anyway, most impressive performers in the topflight over the latest weekend.

I think we'll already know ourselves, and not just based on the latest performance, why Crooks, we'll also not argue with it, selected Valencia as part of his team but explaining his choice he told the BBC.

'He doesn't score many goals these days but this one, for Manchester United against Everton, was worth the wait. Antonio Valencia hit the ball with such force that Jordan Pickford was still in the air when it hit the net. It was an absolute corker. Everton, especially Wayne Rooney, made it difficult for United. It was strange seeing Rooney playing against his old team, nevertheless United had to take their former captain very seriously. Rooney at his sharpest might have had a hat-trick in this game. On this showing, I'm not entirely sure why Mourinho didn't insist the former England international stay at Old Trafford for one more season. He clearly still has goals in him. Perhaps one of the reasons Mourinho decided to let Rooney go was because he had a fast-developing Marcus Rashford in his ranks. The lad can score goals and has terrifying pace. He also has a ready-made captain in Valencia. Two for the price of one, you might say, but that didn't stop the United fans giving Rooney a marvellous standing ovation - quite rightly - when he was substituted in the 82nd minute.'

It's always good to see the club represented in this way, and well played to Valencia for his recognition, but the most important thing about the weekend was of course the points.

Full Team:

Nick Pope (Burnley), Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle United), Joel Matip (Liverpool), Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal), Antonio Valencia (Manchester United), Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City), Mario Lemina (Southampton), Sead Kolasic (Arsenal), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City).
