CL - Manchester United 3 FC Basel 0

After a two season absence, Manchester United got back into the swing of things, in the Champions League, with an emphatic win over the Swiss side, FC Basel.

The win was, in fact, the first time Manchester United had beaten Basel in three meetings at Old Trafford, with the other fixtures ending all-square.

The game saw Basel put up stoic resistance for thirty-five minutes until Marouane Fellaini, on as a substitute for the injured Paul Pogba, out-jumped everybody else to head home a cross from Ashley Young.

However, Basel did have an opportunity to take the lead before Fellaini scored when Luca Zuffi fired wide of the goal when unmarked inside the penalty area.

Any hopes the Swiss side had of getting back onto level terms were ended when Romelu Lukaku netted from inside the box, the goal coming after Manchester United had taken a short corner which was eventually put into the box by Daley Blind.

The game was wrapped up when Marcus Rashford scored to make it 3-0, the young striker firing home a low cross from Fellaini after coming on as a substitute.

The goal means that Rashford has now scored on his first appearance in all the following competitions for Manchester United:

• Champions League

• Premier League

• Europa League

• FA Cup

• League Cup

Manchester United had opportunities to widen the score-line, the nearest to doing so was Henrikh Mkhitaryan who hit the base of the post from close-range.

With the result a foregone conclusion, Basel showed a little ambition late on forcing David de Gea to make a fine save from Mohamed Elyounoussi
