'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fergie Stating The Obvious

Sir Alex Ferguson asked his players to win 12 games and promised that would bring the league title to Old Trafford.

United are six points clear at the top of the table with 14 games to go. With the Red Devils due to visit Liverpool and Chelsea, the title race is set to be interesting but Fergie reckons these games will count for nothing if we win all the others.

'I've said to the players that we're in a position where the league starts now,' said Fergie. 'There are 14 games left and we've got a six-point lead.

'There are some fantastic games ahead. And it's a challenge that we hope we can enjoy. If we win the league after going to places like Chelsea and Liverpool, then we deserve it. But if we win the other 12 games left do you think we will win the league? I think so.'

Surely even Chelsea can't win their last 14 games? Talking about winning 12 is looking like the empire of fantasy but there's the possibility that I'm too pessimistic. Those 36 points would definitely seal the title.

'We know we've still to go to Liverpool and Chelsea. But Chelsea still have to go to Arsenal, which won't be easy.

'We don't have to play Arsenal again, so we can forget about them until next season.

I could say we might face them in the Champions League or in the FA Cup but I'll be generous: I assume he was talking only about the league.

'We drew with Chelsea at home and beat Liverpool. So we've only got two games left of major importance in the sense of playing the other top teams - and both of those are away, at Liverpool and Chelsea.'

I still feel that if we lose these games, we'll lose the title. And we'll lose them as Rooney will play on the left wing, with Giggs struggling in the middle. Cheers.
