With there being no-chance of Manchester United finishing in the top-four of the Premier league, the penultimate fixture of the season, an away trip to take on Southampton, had a surreal feel to it.

Jose Mourinho has prioritised what is left of the season by putting everything into winning the Europa League, in Stockholm, desperate to claim the Champions League place at stake.

At St Mary`s, Manchester United were, on reflection, lucky to come away with a point.

As early as the fifth minute our hosts were presented with a glorious chance to open the scoring when Eric Bailly was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Manolo Gabbiadini stepped forward but Romero did marvellously well to save the spot-kick.

Manchester United`s best chance of the first-half came when Bailly reacted well to test Fraser Forster but the Southampton keeper was equal to the task.

After the break, Southampton kept Romero busy but the keeper was up to the task making several decent saves, proving he has the credentials to succeed David de Gea if the Spaniard is destined to leave Old Trafford.

Manchester United could have snatched all three points but the lively Anthony Martial was deprived of the only goal of the game when his shot struck the post.

The Premier League season, for Manchester United, finishes this Sunday with a fixture against Crystal Palace.
