Middlesbrough 1 Manchester United 3

A fine 3-1 win sees Manchester United climb the Premier League table to fifth position.

Despite his protestations before the match that tiredness would probably see his side only get a draw today Manchester United were too good for a Middlesbrough side that put in a spirited shift.

To combat any fears of tiredness, Jose Mourinho made seven changes to the side that beat FC Rostov 1-0 in midweek.

Despite a bright start from the home side it was Manchester United that were to take the lead. The goal scored in the 30th minute saw Marouane Fellaini meet a cross from Ashley Young, at the far post, to head it powerfully past the former Manchester United keeper Victor Valdes.

The lead was doubled in the 62nd minute when Jess Lingard produced an unstoppable shot from twenty-five yards out that gave Valdes no chance in the Middlesbrough goal.

Middlesbrough got back into the game when Chris Smalling made a hash of an easy clearance and the Middlesbrough substitute, Rudy Gestede, was on hand to beat David de Gea.

Sensing they could grab an unlikely point, Middlesbrough pushed forward but were to concede a third, in stoppage time, when Vlades slipped leaving Antonio Valencia with the simple task of sticking the ball into the net.

Three decent points as Jose Mourinho looks to close in on a top-four finish.
