Wigan Could Bid For Smith

There was a rumour around that Wigan would try to sign Alan Smith on loan from Manchester United. Smudger's problems have been described thousand times on this site and it's no surprise a lot of clubs are reportedly after him.

Wigan's interest is not unusual or unexpected but a comment made by Jewell suggests they will try to buy him from United, for a massive fee.

'We have made a substantial offer for a player, almost a club record in fact,' Jewell told the Wigan Evening Post.

'We are waiting to hear on that one.

'Am I hopeful? Yes, but you never know what might happen in the transfer market.

'I'm not going to say in what position the lad we are after plays, but we feel it would be a good signing for us.'

It's not certain he was talking about Smith but the chance is there. The offer is believed to be around £5 million and that's not a bad money though my heart would place a much higher valuation on him...

He's not really needed at United so if the price is right I think it's a good idea to let him go. A player of Smith's ability desn't deserve to have to settle for reserve football.
