Tim Howard gets the nod for the Carling Cup tie at St Andrews, and he sees it as his chance to show what he can do.
Howard lost his place to Roy Carroll following a Barclays Premiership win over Newcastle last April.
Although Carroll has now left Old Trafford for West Ham, he has since been replaced by Edwin van der Sar, whose injury-free record has restricted Howard to just two senior appearances this term, both in the Carling Cup.
Howard: 'Edwin has said he needs to keep on his toes and that is the case. We have some really good professionals here who are fighting for a place.
'Everyone is training well and watching their backs. That is the way it should be at a big club like this.'
Having fallen at the semi-final stage last season and been beaten by Liverpool in the final three years ago, United are eager to add to their single previous League Cup triumph, back in 1992 when Brian McClair netted the winner against Nottingham Forest.
