Whilst All Appears Graceful on the Surface….

Whilst All Appears Graceful on the Surface….

Underneath might be a different matter!

Whilst all appears to be quiet on the transfer front, although in all honesty we might be resembling a graceful swan whereby everything looks serene but beneath the surface a whole plethora of things might be taking place.

Hopefully one of the plethoras of things will be looking around for a respectable, nay world class, centre back.

With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand having departed Old Trafford we`re vulnerable in that position and continued talk of signing the Arsenal defender, Thomas Vermaelen, hasn`t filled me with confidence.

However, lurking in the media gossip columns this morning is the suggestion that Manchester United are amongst a gaggle of clubs that are, supposedly, in the race to sign the Roam defender, Medhi Benatia.

The defender is rated in the £30 million bracket and as for other clubs supposedly looking at forcing a sale for the 27 year-old, then look no further than Chelsea and the Spanish giants of Real Madrid. However, I can`t help thinking that the price is a bit too steep for someone of that age.

But, just perhaps, this is a move that is being orchestrated beneath that graceful aura being given off by that aforementioned swan!

It does seem strange that we would be in for Benatia at that age and for that price when we've ignored a younger Mangala for the same price or as we are led to believe we only offered 20 million for Hummels. Don't get me wrong Benatia is a hugely superior player to any of our current centre backs but I just cannot see it happening at that price, hopefully I'm wrong as we desperately need someone maybe even 2 centre backs of his quality.

Probably would say 30 mil is a fair price, he's a world class defender in/entering his prime who's only one year into his Roma deal. Centrebacks last a lot longer than most players on the field and at 27 we could look to get 7 years out of him at the very least. It would be a class signing, the sort of signing we're expecting with all the 'watch this space' talk from Woodward, alas I can't see it happening.

I have a feeling we will sign Vermalen and only him, I think we will be met with the no value or players being overpriced message from the club. I have been pessimistic about our dealings for a while now, while having bought Herrera and Shaw, which are both execellent additions, we do need a few more players. I just cant get my head around why we are not signing players. Are they not available, Vidal surely is for the right price, Hummels maybe not, De Maria yes, but maybe not what we need, but there are other suitable players available, but we just arent going anywhere. Surely LVG realize that the squad is not quite there to win the title, so what is this problem. Does he want to wait for Strootman and other targets to become available, meanwhile Liverpool have aqquired 7 players, yes its looks more like quantity rather than quality, but still. Is it a money issue, I think this is major part of problem we are just not prepared to pay top money for the selected few like Hummels (20m if that is true, is just pathetic), Woodward might say we are, but I am not sure. I am just bewildered as to why we are not acting, Chelsea, City and even Arsenal have strengthen and we have some seriuos cathing up to do. I say pay the marketprice, its an investment into the CL and the PL title that generates income needed to cover the outlays. Arrgh im just frustated at how little we seem to do.
