A First Signing?

With the van Gaal / Giggs combination now installed for the coming season, it`ll certainly be interesting to see who will be the first new signing of the new era.

This morning one leading exponent of the tabloid trade is of the belief that it could be a player none of us might have even considered being top of the list of those required.

Apparently Louis van Gaal is keen to bring Memphis Depay to Old Trafford.

Depay, rated at 15 million, is a 20 year old striker currently on the books of PSV Eindhoven but a young striker who has already made an impact at international level.

Van Gaal introduced him to the Dutch national side whilst Depay was still a teenager and has also selected him for the Dutch squad going to the World Cup, in Brazil, this summer.

Although the youngster is still contracted to PSV Eindhoven until 2017, a move to Old Trafford may be viewed as a distinct possibility with a source close to Louis van Gaal supposedly remarking,

"Van Gaal really likes Memphis - he put him in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers when he was only a teenager. Now he`s taking the kid to Brazil."

"Everyone agrees he`s one of the most promising and skilful young stars in Dutch football."

"No one would be surprised if he was on his way to United sooner rather than later."

Therefore, if Memphis Depay were to be signed, would it cast doubts over the futures of the likes of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, or perhaps even Wayne Rooney?

Your views on this subject would be most appreciated!

Would definitely signal the end of Hernandez to be honest. Don't think we need a striker, even if Hernandez leaves but I suppose we'll have to wait and see. Personally of all the young Dutch links Vilhena has been the one I've liked the sound of most thus far.

Memphis Depay is an extremely talented young player. But he's only playing as a striker because of the change in formation from 433 to 352 by the dutch national team. He's actually a left winger with great pace, dribbling, fantastic long range shooting and movement. He's not the finished article yet but at 20 who is? His upside and talent ceiling are extremely high and higher than Zaha. He had 12 goals and 6 assists in the Eredivisie and was in the team of the year. With our wing issues I really hope LVG brings him in. I really rate this kid and hope he has a good world cup

Very clearly more of an expert on him than me Roland, sounds like something we've missed from our wingers, and overall game in general, for a while :(

Tbh the lad does look to be a real talent, he could be worth a shout especially if he can play out wide as well.

Hahaha I wouldn't claim to be an expert. He can be a bit selfish at times which effects his decision making. But with experience and time that will come. I definitely think he's worth it for q relatively small fee compared to some of the bids we are supposedly making. And Marco Reus ruling himself out. Also he's strong for his size which is ideal for the EPL. He offers everything that Young and Valencia can't and what Nani can on a good day (which are too far and few between).
