Nullifying Robben (and Ribbery)

Going into the game last night, against the current Champions League holders Bayern Munich, Arjen Robben was identified as one of the danger-men United needed to look out for.

The Dutchman, accustomed to scoring decisive goals at Old Trafford, has the ability to win games with his sublime skills and lightening pace.

Last night though Robben was restricted to two decent efforts on goal when, for once, his markers switched off and allowed him to cut in from the wing and unleash a shot, the other cam elate on, as Bayern pressed for a winner, but the Dutchman saw his shot drift inches wide of the post.

Thankfully, David de Gea was on hand to produce a decent stop but Moyes plans of getting the wide-men to track back and assist the full backs helped to nullify, mostly, the threat that Robben and the other Bayern flair player, Ribbery, presented.

Following the final whistle, Robben, speaking to the media, had this to say about the events that had captivated a packed Old Trafford, remarking,

"United played very defensively and they were only waiting for counter-attacks."

"But 1-1 is a good result. We will take it and try to finish the job next week."

I`d hazard a guess Manchester United, David Moyes and those selected to represent United will have something to say on that matter!

We played defensively? I'd love to know how to play offensively against a team that keeps the ball solely so you can't have it. Doesn't matter who your playing against it always going to be seen as counter-attacking and defensive if your game revolves around keeping the ball because without it the opposition can't score.
