Vidic - Rolling Back the Years!

Last night, David Moyes decided to utilize the tried and trusted central defensive partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

It was a move that worked well and although Bayern Munich might have bossed the game possession wise, the two defensive stalwarts ensured that the back-line held firm and that it was only breached once when a fine move from Bayern saw Bastian Schweinsteiger provided with the opportunity to smash home a perfect pass.

Vidic, as his career at Old Trafford comes to an end, left a lasting impression on the tie with a classic header, arching his neck backwards to not only connect with the ball but steer it past Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.

Speaking about the first leg of a tie that is superbly balanced, the club captain had this to say,

"After the last few weeks I think we should be pleased with the performance. We defended will tonight."

"We let them have possession which we knew they were good at."

"We defended well as a team and tried to hurt them on the counter-attack, which I think we did."

The Allianz Arena beckons next Wednesday, it remains to be seen whether United are up to the task ahead of them.

I still maintain that he should of been kept on for another year or two, our best centre back by a mile.

The Vidic that played last night was completely different to the one we've seen all season long. At the start of the season I felt he should stay but as the season went on for me it became clear he's not got the legs for the pace and physical demands of the league. Sorry but for me one great performance hasn't changed that. The team to start dominating games needs to push up and have a high line, you can't do that effectively with Vidic anymore.

Of course he shouldn't play every game as you have said age has caught up with him, however he is the only leader that we have at the club, the only one who you look at and think "***** he'd kick my head in". 3 of our back 4 will be gone at the end of the season, Vidic as captain should of been kept on to help bed in our supposed new centre back pairing of Garay and Jagielka. If Giggs can play a few games at 40 then Vidic could of played 15 to 20 games a season for another year at least. I'm honestly *****ting myself thinking about who Moyes is going to sign, probably Michael Dawson.
