'If It's Football, It's Vital'

United in Race for Mata

Despite proposed suggestions to the contrary, it has been very quiet with regards to David Moyes strengthening a struggling squad this January transfer window.

If there are to be any signings then the last days of January could prove to be exciting.

Today speculation is mounting that United are set to make a bid, inside the next 48 hours, for the currently out-of-favour Spanish midfielder Juan Mata.

It`s inferred that Mata could be exactly the kind of signing United need to rejuvenate their season with his silky skills and prompting from midfield, allied with the goals he scores, injecting something into the latter half of the season.

The speculation also goes on to infer that a bid of 37 million could be forthcoming, although another source doubts whether Chelsea would be interested in selling to a Premier League rival and a price of nearer 40 million would be required to ease the player away from Stamford Bridge.

Plus, nestling amongst all the talk is the possibility that Chelsea might do a deal with United only if a certain Wayne Rooney becomes part of the negotiation process.

It would be the sort of signing that could give the squad a massive boost and galvanise whats left of the season and sandier we finish inside the top four. All the same though I don't think it will happen. Mourinho won't sell to another premier league rival let alone Chelsea. For all his assertions that the Premier League should take a leaf out of the Serie A and clubs shouldn't begrudge allowing their star players to freely move around in the league he wasn't so supportive of that notion when he denied Ba the chance to join Arsenal on loan out of fear that Arsenal were title challengers. Also, as Gav Nev has already pointed out on sky sports, unless we change the system to accommodate Mata or Mata learns to play as a winger or inverted winger he simply won't fit into the team.

Let me try that again:

All the same though I don't think it will happen. Mourinho won't sell to another premier league rival let alone Chelsea as a football club selling to domestic rival. Stupid autocorrect is so insistent that it's right!

Change the system I suppose theres got too be a first time for everything ;-). We need a few good signings not one marquee. Not sure Mata is a signing we need we have Rooney and Kagawa playing the same position. Get rid of cleverly to rid us of the temptation to play him and bring in Cabaye.
MotorMad
Theres no doubting that mata is a great player but where would we play him? His favoured position is possibly the one position our squad is pretty good at. I hope its all nonsense, 40 million could be better spent elsewhere. Buy Cabaye for now and maybe one more good player out of that cash and then go in for the likes of Gundogan, Koke or whomever in the summer.
