Valencia - Looking for Improvement

I`m always impressed when a player steps forward and admits things haven`t gone the way they`d hoped this season.

It`s fair to say that it has been a hit-and-miss season for Antonio Valencia, with his form dipping alarmingly in recent weeks. But Valencia, in a brief interview with the media, has stepped forward and admitted as such, blaming his failure to recover, properly, from an old injury, or as he puts it,

"It`s not been quite the season I would have hoped for on a personal front."

"The injuries I`ve had have held me back a bit. I still get the odd twinge from the last injury I had to my leg and that has perhaps affected my progress slightly."

Valencia is currently on a run of 30 games without a goal, hopefully, as the business end of the season approaches; we`ll see an upturn in Antonio`s fortunes.

Not overly concerned about the number of goals his scored its the lack of assists which concerns me. He was one of the most underrated players last year. Despite notching up assist stats similar to mata and Silva he didn't receive half the plaudits they did. Don't buy into him saying its down to his injuries either, they didn't bother him last year so why would they crop up and effect his game now? Think he just lacks confidence in his ability. Typically he would accelerate past the fullback down the touch line and whip in cross no questions asked. He's one dimensional, but he's so good at it it doesn't matter as even though defender know what he's going to do they can't stop it from happening. Lately he just seems to stutter and decide against going down the wing and he looks awkward doing anything else so when he does do anything else he loses the ball. The old Valencia is still in, he just needs his confidence back and the only way that's going to happen is if he torments and rinses his fullback repeatedly.

His all round game has been shocking this season. Makes you wonder if his confidence is shot? The problem that then stems is do you drop him for a bit or keep playing him? Both tactics could backfire and knock his confidence even further off kilter. Just have to hope Fergie plays his cards right.

Thing is with Valencia whilst at the moment due to poor form he doesn't offer anything going forward he's still a good team player, he will put in a solid defensive effort, he will cover for Rafael, he will run continuously until the end of the game. Like Rooney in that sense I suppose, when he's off form he's ineffective offensively but still does his bit for the team. The decision is even harder when you consider who do play on the right instead of him. We're lacking depth in the wing department for the first time in a long time. Nani can play instead of Valencia but then do you have a misfiring off form young on the left wing? Play Nani on the left and you have a misfiring off form Valencia on the right. There's no winning unless Fergie plays Kagawa wide left and Nani wide right but by doing so you know Kagawa will come inside and not run the wing. Meh, I dunno...
