Welbeck Drought

Welbeck Drought

Last season, the name of Danny Welbeck appeared on the score-sheet with alarming regularity.

This season, things haven`t quite gone so well for the young forward with the statistics showing that Danny has scored just the 1 goal in 27 games.

However, Wayne Rooney has sprung to young Welbeck`s defence, pointing out that he`s rarely been played as an out and out striker this season, something Wayne has also experienced during his United career, or as Wayne puts it,

"Everyone labels Danny as a striker, which I`ve had at times when I have played in different positions."

"Then someone says I haven`t scored for eight games when I hadn`t played up front."

"Danny has been out wide a lot this season, but he works hard and brings a lot of energy to the team. When he gets a run up front, he`ll score goals."

Here`s hoping Danny`s luck starts to turn tomorrow night when all the indications are that Welbeck will start alongside Rooney, up front for England!

No offence Rooney but being the golden boy an all very rarely are you played out of position like Danny is. You had to play on the left for a short stint and once or twice had to drop into midfield but primarily for a large majority of your career you've been playing just behind the forward. The reason you went games without scoring is because when you're off the ball you put in an incredible defensive effort, drop too deep and are then out of position to contribute to the attack. Due to this dropping deep you just as well play CM in my opinion so we can play 2 striker and then Danny might be able to play in his preferred position and Hernandez might get the game time he deserves also.

With regards to Danny himself he's a very good footballer who's just lacking a finishing touch. I'm going to put myself out there and say his got the potential still to be a world class forward. All the ingredients are there, moments of pure inspiration, good ball control, good dribbling skills, good aerially, great technique, good hold up and interlink play and his industry and work ethic are just a bonus. Issue is only he can score these backheel flicks and elegant chips over the keeper but then row z a 1-on-1 opportunity. If he could work on his finishing and composure, perhaps even add longshots to his locker (we know hes capable of it) he'd be a complete package up front and will see his goal tally increase dramatically. Hopefully during his time here Welbeck learns a thing or two about finishing from RVP, that might work wonders.

I've said before the lad baffles me. Undoubtedly talented but inexplicably inconsistent when it comes to finishing. But he can only get better with the wealth of attacking talent he has to learn from. If he gets the finishing sorted we've got a major star of the future.
