Is De Gea the Man?

The fight for permanent possession of the keepers jersey looks set to continue into the New Year.

Already speculation has done the rounds about Sir Alex Ferguson pursuing the services of another keeper, but, as we head towards the festive season it appears that our young Spanish keeper, David de Gea, holds the majority of the cards.

Speaking about having to deal with the competition Anders Lindegaard continues to provide De Gea has remarked to the media,

"The biggest thing for me is that I`ve managed to work through some difficult times and those moments always make you stronger. It makes you a stronger person and a better player."

"I think I`ve improved right across the board, in all aspects of my game. I`m still only young and I`m learning every day."

"I`ve hopefully got a long career ahead of me, so I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can while I`m young."

From where we sit, the problem is that our quest to continue to dominate the domestic scene and move on towards doing the same at European level, means there is very little room for error, hence the speculation about Sir Alex making a move for another keeper.

Is David de Gea the man for that future?

Your thoughts would be gladly welcomed.

Fergie knew what he was taking on when signing a young keeper so I expect him to stick with de Gea as he gains experience and learn a rather than buy a new keeper. The only real weakness in his game is his ability to deal with aerial balls into the box, his physique isn't domineering enough and his judgement poor. Judgement will come with time and experience however his physique is something only he can do, he needs to bulk up. Otherwise I'd say he's the best shot stopper in the league and despite claims early on last season, he's also very good from range whilst his distribution is also up there with the best. If de Gea can't develop his game and adapt to the premier league and the aerial balls in the box then we must take getting a new keeper in and him out under serious consideration, we can't afford to have a keeper who can't deal with balls into the box in a league whereby playing the ball into the box is a much used element of the game. De Gea has the potential to surpass van Der Sar, it's up to him to fulfill it though.
