Reading 3 United 4

Reading 3 United 4

Well what was that all about?

Some shocking defending, by both sides saw seven goals scored in a scintillatingly entertaining first half; but then delivered a second half that fell awesomely flat!

Fortunately, it was United that took the three points and on a day when two of our rivals dropped points, the three points won ensured we tightened our grip on that top spot in the Premier League.

So how did that crazy first half pan out?

Well Reading took the lead t make it 1-0 as early as the 8th minute when Evans headed out a cross only for Hal Robson-Kanu to score from eight yards out.

Five minutes later United were level whenAnderson made it 1-1 when he exchanged passes with Ashley Young to hit a superb shot past Federici.

United then made it 2-1 in the 16th minute when Tabb barged Evans over to enable Wayne Rooney to step up and beat the keeper easily.

Reading then fought back to level at 2-2 when Adam Le Fondre headed home unchallenged from four yards out with Van Persie unable to clear off the line.

Our hosts then made it 3-2 when Sean Morrison out-jumped Evans to head home from close range from a corner before United made it 3-3 when Patrice Evra cut a ball back for Wayne Rooney to score from seven yards out.

The goal feast was completed in the 34th minute when United made it 4-3 when Robin Van Persie netted after beating the offside trap and racing on to a pass from Rooney.

Half time came and went and you just knew the second forty-five minutes would be an anti-climax. There were chances made but the clinical finishing, allied with defensive woe, had gone.

Pushing for an equaliser, McAnuff saw a shot clear the bar, before Evra survived an appeal for a penalty with the referee deeming it to be a fine tackle on Mariappa. Trying to take advantage of the space left by Reading as they pushed on, Van Persie shot over before also tackling the mad-cap Reading keeper but then proceeding to shoot wide.

Lindegaard was then forced to save from McAnuff before grabbing the loose ball at the feet of Pogrebnyak before a foray forward by Smalling saw the defender clear the bar with his shot.

A disappointing second half but a first half that will live long in the memory of those that witnessed it.

Should've been 5-3 but hey 3 points is 3 points. Too many shocking performances from the defenders and keeper in one game, good thing Fergie made the right but bold decision to sub Rafael off early on. I'm sure if he was allowed more subs he might have considered subbing Lindegaard off as well, he had a shocker and judging by Fergies keeper rotation policy de Gea should be in goal for the next game. Scoring one more than your opinion is a good tactic yeah but it's not helping the goal difference Fergie strived to improve last season. In fact, signing RVP to add goals is pointless if we're conceding more. The defence really does need sortin out.
