Hodgson Backs Rooney

Wayne Rooney may be missing from the England squad, for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, but he`s still been the subject of some pre-match press questioning for Roy Hodgson.

With his fitness levels being questioned by some, Roy has nailed his colours to the mast by sticking by his man, remarking at the packed press conference

"I don`t have any concerns. He`s a top striker and someone I want in the squad."

"We`re talking about a star. And when a star maybe does not reach the level expected of him, criticism follows."

"But I have no criticism of him or his fitness."

"I`d dispute the fact that he wasn`t fit at the Euros."

"What he does in pre-season is a matter for Sir Alex Ferguson and his club. I can`t make Rooney fit."

"I hope to see him in the United team fit and playing well, so I can welcome him back into the England squad."


I reckon the whole country would echo those sentiments. No disrespect to Danny Welbeck, Danny Sturridge and Jermain Defoe, but without Rooney our attacking options do look a little lightweight!
