'If It's Football, It's Vital'

How Sure Was Sir Alex?

You get the distinct impression that Sir Alex Ferguson is still rather chuffed to have secured the signature of Robin Van Persie.

Although Sir Alex let slip to a leading tabloid, sometime before the deal was sealed, he was confident of seeing Van Persie in a United shirt this season, you still get the impression that he feared something, or someone, would scupper the deal.

In an interview given in the media, Sir Alex has remarked about the acquisition,

"It was a refreshing transfer because he was also wanted by Manchester City and Juventus and probably turned down better offers to pursue a dream and play for a club with footballing reasons."

"A lot of players would like to play for Manchester United - as the agents keep telling us."

"But over the last two or three years I think there has been a trend for players to settle for the cash, as we all know, Manchester City can beat us all at that."

Whilst admiring the bared cats claws relating to that last comment, I still have the belief that Sir Alex, for all his confidence, wasn`t 100% sure Van Persie would sign for United until the ink had dried on at contract.

How about you?
