Van Persie - Debut Time!

Van Persie - Debut Time!

We can all claim, in hindsight, that the decision not to start with our recent signing last night was a mistake.

Introduced with just twenty-two minutes left to save the match, Van Persie looked keen to make an impression, taking a corner and a throw-in as soon as he`d replaced Welbeck.

But apart from that the Dutch striker found it very hard to make any memorable contribution.

After the dust had settled on an opening fixture defeat, Sir Alex Ferguson had this to say about the debut of our latest expensive striker,

"We played around him too much. We didn`t show enough penetration and, with Robin in your side, you, know you want to use his ability against the centre backs. But we didn`t use him enough."

We didn`t and perhaps, in hindsight (that word again), we`d have been better off employing a different approach, slowing the game down and probing with a little more sensitivity instead of trying to, at times, muscle our way through!

It was evident we weren't playing to RVP's strengths as soon as he started to drop deep and wide just to get a touch on the ball. Ideally we should be using him and Rooney as target man as they can win you a game in an instant rather than faffing around with the ball and passing sideways.
