'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Everton 1 United 0

I`ll keep this short, although to keep it sweet remains impossible.

It`s not often that united slump to an opening day defeat, in fact it isn`t since 2004 (I believe) that we last suffered that fate.

But last night, over at Goodison Park, my hope was that we`d issue a real signal of intent, an intent that would infer that Manchester City should be more than a little nervous about successfully defending their Premier League title.

After all hadn`t we spent big in bringing in Kagawa and Van Persie?

Strangely enough, Sir Alex decided to leave the latter on the bench until we were chasing the game, a chase that was to be, ultimately, fruitless.

But to be honest, we got, in my opinion, what we deserved and the margin of victory could have been worse.

On a couple of occasions the excellent David De Gea saved our skins and Leon Osman must be wondering exactly what he has to do to score against us, after seeing one shot cannon to safety off of the underside of the bar.

The winner when it did come; came from United`s failure to deal with a cross. Carrick struggled to deal with the leap of the excellent Fellaini and the Belgian powered his header past De Gea.

Sir Alex tried to rescue matters by throwing on Van Persie but for all the huffing and puffing and forcing Everton to defend on the back foot, United couldn`t get past the excellent defensive duo of Jagielka and Distin.

Like I said in my introduction, short but not very sweet.
