Fletcher in Surprise Return

Although a United XI went down 2-1 to Aberdeen in a testimonial for Neil Simpson last night, the fixture provided Sir Alex Ferguson with one positive note.

It, surprisingly, saw the re-appearance of Darren Fletcher in a United shirt, his first in nine months following his medical problems.

It seems that Fletcher urged Sir Alex to give him some match time with Sir Alex confirming afterwards,

"It has been quiet progress for the boy."

"He joined in training a couple of weeks ago and it`s one of those situations where you say 'let`s see how he does` because he`s had a really difficult time."

"Therefore I was not really placing too much hope in it but let`s see how he does. He`s got to the stage where he feels he needs a game."

"I let him join Scotland this week but he wanted a game so I said come to Aberdeen and join up afterwards."

Now whether Fletcher can kick-on and get back to the status he achieved before the illness struck remains to be seen.

As for the game, United fell 2-0 down thanks to goals from Hayes and Shaughnessy before a late reply from Anderson gave the result a degree of respectability.

The fixture, something more akin to a celebration than a full competitive fixture, also saw the likes of Dwight Yorke and Clayton Blackmore adorn United colours, it really was that kind of night!

Great to hear and see and really encouraging with regards to a potential return but as I've said before I won't be holding my breath.
