Baines Ponders Over His Future

Baines Ponders Over His Future

Whether we`ll sign the Everton left back Leighton Baines this week, next week or not at all only time will tell.

But speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford continues and the player has admitted in the Sunday press that he is aware of the talk, remarking,

"Although I started preparing for the Euros with England as soon as the season finished I`ve been aware of what`s being said in the Press about my future. But beyond that I don`t know much."

"I`ve got here years still to go at Everton, and, although I don`t think it does anyone any harm to be linked to a club like United, it doesn`t do any good either."

"But it is becoming a particular problem at Everton that players have to be sold each year."

"Over the years the manager has lost players here and there and I`m sure he would have liked to have kept hold of."

"Whether that`s because the club have needed the money or whether it`s because they received what they consider is a considerable bid for a player, I don`t know."

Will he sign for us or will he still be an Everton player come the start of the season on August 18th?

I have a couple of Everton people that I follow, and they are usually spot on with things related to Everton, and all of them have said, as of right now, United have made no contact with Everton about Baines whatsoever. Additionally we DONT need to sell a Baines or Fellaini this summer, and in fact, we could have a couple extra mil to spend, probably Pienaar. The Baines deal just doesn't make sense to me, maybe in a year or two, but right now, I don't think i suits either side, I mean United already have Evra who has 1 or 2yrs left and for Everton, Baines is really our only senior left back, however, in a year or two I think it makes sense, Baines would surely want a crack at CL footy, United will need a replacement for Evra, Baines would be worth less than the 20mil that United should expect to pay if they want him and Everton would have a ready made replacement in Luke Garbutt (who is basically Baines junior from all reports). I don't know, United could come in for him, but as of right now, nothing has happened, and it certainly isn't a "done deal" as some people are saying.

I like Baines he's a fantastic LB and, if you're going by league form, he's Englands best LB by a country mile. The issue lies in the combination of the facts that he's 27 and will cost us a reported 20 mil. His age wouldn't bother me so much if he wasn't so expensive, we'd be paying 20 mil for a player who has 5 years at the top before hitting the decline phase of his career. I mean for less we can get a decent LB now with the potential to be brilliant and get more years service out of them. I doubt Fergie is looking to replace our captain Evra as much as he is just looking to get in some competition and cover for Evra so he's not running himself legless every game every season and Baines doesn't fit that bill, he surpasses Evra. Like Rob said maybe in a couple of years when he's older but his contract has ran down and we can get him cheap and he will reflect his quality and years of service in a decent price and Evra's resigned to a squad role because he isn't fit enough all assuming Fabio, or some other youngster, hasn't stepped up until then.

Better than Evra, on recent form anyway. But that price of 20 million is a joke.
