Rooney`s first goal in the finals of an international tournament for some time; has one ex-England striker gabbling enthusiastically about some kind of record being broken before these finals end.
Alan Shearer, who walked away from football at a relatively young age, ha surged Rooney to go on and smash his goal-scoring record, at international level.
The close-range header, against the Ukraine, was Rooney`s 29th for his country placing him one goal behind Alan Shearer, who with 30 is 5th in the all-time scorers list.
Talking about breaking his record (?), Shearer has remarked to the media,
"I hope by the end of this tournament he has smashed my record."
"If he has then who knows what we will have achieved."
The churlish amongst us could infer a quarter-final exit, losing 3-2 to Italy with Rooney getting both the England goals!
But, continuing, Shearer also gives his opinion on Rooney`s performance against the Ukraine having been absent through suspension thus far in the tournament, adding,
"It wasn`t his greatest game and he missed a good chance early on."
"But he showed his instinct to be in the right place for the goal no matter how the ball got there."
"Great strikers can have poor games but still come out with a goal."
"Now after getting that game under his belt and a goal I expect to see a much better Wayne Rooney against Italy."
So do we, but we also have this feeling that Italy will be game too far for an England side that might have won the group but who are, at best, nothing more than average.
Harsh words but true!
