Welbeck and Rooney?

It is looking very likely that Roy Hodgson will be selecting Danny Welbeck to partner the returning Wayne Rooney up front.

Welbeck, who grabbed the goal that saw England draw level with the Swedes in the previous group game, has performed well so far and it`ll be interesting to see if he and Rooney can replicate the partnership they`ve developed on the club stage at international level.

Naturally, for Roy Hodgson, it was a difficult decision with Andy Carroll having also impressed against Sweden but explaining his decision, ahead of the competition game with the Ukraine tonight, Roy remarked,

"It has become a very difficult choice because both Welbeck and Carroll have done so well."

"They have given the classic manager`s headache but it is the headache we all want really, players in form and competing for a place."

"I think our ambitions were clear from the start. We came here hoping to play well enough to get out of the group. We`ve a big game against Ukraine and we haven`t achieved that ambition yet."

"I don`t think the fact Wayne is back has drastically changed our ambitions. We`ve believed all along that we could do well in the competition."

It promises to be an exciting contest and I, for one, can`t wait!

Surely it was a no brainier considering Welbeck and Rooneys link up play all season has been fantastic and also that Welbeck is industrious and fits right into Roy's system as he puts in a shift both defensively and offensively. No offence to Carroll, he's looking like hes getting back to his old Newcastle self but he doesn't offer the variety Welbeck does nor the industry.
