Rumbling On and On…….

As with Nick Powell, speculation relating to a Manchester United attempt to lure Leighton Baines continues to be generated.

Today, the Manchester Evening News (MEN) reports that United are set to step up their interest in bringing the Everton left-back to Old Trafford, even more so with the Italian side, Napoli, also showing interest.

But as the MEN continues, the stumbling block of Everton wanting £20 million for their asset isn`t something that United favour with the club looking to lure Everton into a deal that`s worth no more than £15 million.

I get the feeling this one could rumble on and on……….

Baines is very happy at Everton and isn't a lad who will push for a move either, still has 3 or so years left on his contract, and contrary to what everyone believes, this summer we are not as hard pushed for money as last summer. Leaves Everton in a strong position, and if United want Baines (which I still have doubts) then they are going to have to meet Everton's valuation of 20mil (which i don't see them doing)

Pretty much spot on Rob. Baines is more of a humble footballer and isn't swayed into acting out Berba style to engineer a move, not that I'd want to see that anyway, it's never a good omen. I don't believe we're after him at the same time either. The clubs no big signings over the age of 26 policy effectively means we wouldn't spend 20+ mil on a player over 26 whilst Baines, arguably being the best LB in the league on a 3 year contract and coming at an English premium Everton, who are hardball when it comes to selling players anyway, will demand a 20+ fee. Not only that but I don't think Fergie is looking to replace Evra and knock him out of the first eleven but just provide decent enough back-up and cover for him and Baines doesn't reflect this, he surpasses it. Evra, despite not Being the LB he use to be and being more defensively suspect particularly against better opposition, is still good enough to do a job for us and a majority of the teams in the league (the other few he may need a more defensively solid cover and back-up for). Evras still got a good 2-3 years in him and he is our captain, I don't think Fergie is looking to replace him just yet. If we need back-up fullbacks I still don't see why we just don't opt for younger options who can improve and possibly surpass our current ones whilst offering decent back up as well, once again I'll pitch the names Olsson and Clyne, young, great prospects and cheap and provide us with the quality and depth in the area we lack it in.

Maybe Hollands Willems (or however you spell it), looks like a potential class player at LB and is already making the LB position his own already at the age of 17.could push Evra for a spot.
