Carrick - Retired?

The absence of Michael Carrick from Roy Hodgson`s squad of twenty-three for the Euro 2012 Finals has become a little clearer this morning.

It transpires that Michael had informed the Football Association that he no longer wanted to be considered for selection if he was only ever going to be a bit-part player or confined to the bench, which would also explain his absence from the standby list of five players.

Speaking about the thirty year-old midfielder, Roy Hodgson had this to say at his lunchtime press conference yesterday,

Told FA that at 30 he no longer wants to be considered if he is just a bit part player or on the bench

"I wouldn`t dream of putting Michael on a standby list after he has made it clear in the past he doesn`t want to be involved like that."

"I`d have to be convinced he was better than the four I`ve selected and that he`d be happy to come out of retirement."

I have to admit Michael`s decision isn`t one I agree with but each to himself, as they say.

after being overlooked so many times over the years, I dont really blame him, but in defence of the England managers, he is a player that is perhaps a little to introverted at times and seems to tale a time to settle into any football enviroment. I have always felt this was something that has counted against him, as I done believe he has ever truly settled into the England squad, let alone the team, therefore he has never felt comfortable or settled on the international stage

ill never forget how good this guy was at spurs.

Carrick has retired? Yes, Brilliant, Great. What he only retired from international football, ah *****.

Has never reached the heights he reached at spurs but overall he has been a decent squad player for us. Credit where its due this season he really has turned around his performances and form which for two years he really didnt deserve to be at the club for. Glad to see the old Carrick back and putting club before country.
