'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Nistelrooy Backs His Mate

Ruud van Nistelrooy says Gary Neville deserves the captain's armband.

Neville will lead the Red Devils into action as permanent skipper for the first time against Portsmouth on Saturday.

Apparently Ferguson did also consider Ryan Giggs, the only man who has spent more time than Neville at Old Trafford, and Van Nistelrooy.

Ruud van Nistelrooy: 'It is not a disappointment. If I had been manager, I would have decided the same thing.

'I took great pride in leading the team out in a difficult period where we had to bounce back from a 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough and everything that happened after that. I enjoyed the job a lot.

'But Gary is the perfect captain for our team. He has been at the club his whole life and has won everything in football.

'He has great experience and is a great character, so you could not wish for any more in a captain.'
