Stranger Things Have Happened

On the back of recent defensive lapses, could Sir Alex Ferguson be looking to bring an old-boy back to Old Trafford?

One popular tabloid paper reckons that might be the case with United seeking to take advantage of the current unrest in the Camp Nou, following Guardiola`s leaving revelation, by making a bid for twenty-five year old Gerard Pique.

Like I said, stranger things have happened.

Well Rio will be 34 pretty soon and we can't rely on him to perform to the best of his abilities and we will just have Vidic,Evans and Smalling with us.Its not by any means a priority,I mean even if we get him he will not be coming to be on the bench which means the development of Evans and Smalling will be disrupted.I would prefer if we went for someone like Martinez who could be our DM as well as our CB if required. He wouldn't look out of place. He has been deployed as one this season with Bilbao although he is a DM.

I haven't mentioned Jones as a CB because I just don't feel that will be his place.I look at him as a DM judging him by how he likes to go box to box and I guess thats where he will end up playing. He just doesn't have the discipline to be a CB at least not now.He will take a bit of time to get used to that role (DM) but I'm pretty sure he will do well once he plays in that role regularly.

I would love to see him back. He struggled as a youngster but now he's a world class centre back up there with Vidic and Kompany, wish we had kept him. However I can't see it happening, firstly his got Barca DNA and its unlikely that he'll want to leave Barcelona. Secondly Barca won't want to sell him and are under no obligation to sell him. Thirdly the money involved would no doubt blow us out of the water. We do need another CB and RB though I reckon, Ferdinand is getting old whilst Vidic is injury prone meaning we only have 3 reliable long term options at CB in Smalling, Jones and Evans. One natural RB in Rafael and 2 natural LB's in Evra and Fabio but Fabio needs first team experience to develop whilst Evra is in need of competition.

Think any unrest at Barca is exagerated, when Guardiola resigned the noises coming from the players was business as usual. Martinez looks a good player, reminds me of Kompany in that he appears to be a DM who might end up at CB. We like our Spanish speeakers at Eastlands so I imagine we'd be in the running were Martinez to move.
