Educating Smalling

I guess the honeymoon period is over for Chris Smalling!

Since joining United, from Fulham, the versatile defender has enjoyed a somewhat meteoric rise to fame culminating in international recognition.

But, starting his first game for United in ten fixtures, Chris has copped for a bit of flak after being accused of ball watching when City scored the only goal of the game ad according to the tabloid press has, subsequently, felt the full hairdryer treatment from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The boss though, outside of the dressing room, has been a little more diplomatic simply saying about the forty-firth minute goal,

"If you lose a goal at a set piece you only have yourself to blame at this level."

For Smalling, I guess it is a case of live and learn!

This boy yes has had a dip in form but there is no doubting the guy is talented .He just has to play regularly and I for one would like to see him partnered with vidic at the start of next season,so that he understands his importance and responsibiliity in the team and he will also be able to develop his game by playing with Vidic.

Not living up to the media hype eh? He's not a bad player at all, but if the various brown-nosing reds in the press didn't go overly mad in an effort to big up all your young players, then they wouldn't be under so much pressure. Asdie from the fact that describing Pil Jones as the "next Duncan Edwards" had us all in stitches, it put one hell of a lot of pressure on the player himself to live up to the tag. Bit of an own goal?

Smalling will live and learn and I'm confident he will become one of Englands and the Premier Leagues best defenders in years to come. Ultimately what seperated the two sides was a tactical disaster in the team selected and a moment of immaturity. Smalling never lost us the game, Fergie did with the most erratic time line-up I've seen since the 3-2 loss to Blackburn.
