'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A Change of Heart?

Having, not too long ago, referred to the Europa League as a punishment for failing to produce the goods in the Champions League, has Sir Alex Ferguson revised his views on the competition?

The reason we ask is that with our first competitive tie in the Europa League fast approaching, Sir Alex seems to have realigned his philosophy and appears to be relishing the prospect of still being in European football in one sort of form or other, remarking,

"We definitely want to win this tournament."

"I am treating this seriously. We`re going to have a go."

"The thing is to look forward to it. It`s still European football, it`s still a good standard of football."

"The great thing is we don`t have a game on the Saturday so I can play my strongest team - and I will play my strongest team."

"It`s a bit of a bonus for us. It`s amazing that in 55 years` involvement in Europe, we`ve never played each other."

"The name of Ajax still has that great aura about it. They are not having a great time at the moment and their directors have resigned, but I think playing against United they will be motivated."

"Like ourselves, they have always produced good players and played good football."

"They have a great stadium and great pitch. Hopefully we can get through."

I wonder what his thoughts will be as he tunes in to watch the first of the knockout stages in the Champions League on TV this coming midweek!
