Defence Will See Us Through!

We`ve got it all to do when we go to Basel on Wednesday evening.

A failure to reach the knockout stages would be a ball-busting blow.

However, Anders Lindegaard, who got the nod ahead of David De Gea on Saturday at Villa Park, has no doubt that we`ll ease through.

The Dane reckons our defence will be most valuable asset he reckons, remarking after the Villa game,

Our defence was world class against Aston Villa."

"Vidic and Ferdinand showed they are truly world class players."

"The quality we have been showing in defence since the Manchester City game has been scary."

Continuing, Anders goes on to discuss the fight for central defence positions, adding,

"The competition for those two spots is amazing."

"There are four or five players that could play in those positions."

"We have a couple of world-class defenders in Rio and Nemanja but Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are ready to fill their positions."

Two questions!

Firstly, did it need that City shock to jolt us to our defensive senses?

And secondly, which of the central defenders would you go with on Wednesday evening?

The 6-1 was the result that finally got Fergie to sort out the defence but the warning signs were there long before and the side chose to ignore them. It shouldn't of taken a defeat of any proportions to see we were struggling defensively and needed work but I suppose it was swept under the carpet by the fact that whilst we were conceding opportunities thanks to De Gea we weren't shipping many goals and were still winnning the games anyway. A solid defensive display will see us through to the knock-out stage and with Vidic in the side and our recent defensive efforts i'm feeling relaxed and confident ahead of the Basel game. "We have a couple of world-class defenders in Rio and Nemanja but Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are ready to fill their positions." - Jones and Smalling can fill Ferdinands position no doubt but Vidic is another story. The effect that man has on our defence as amazing, it's no coincidence that our best defensive displays come along when he's back from injury and in the team. He commands the backline and ensures everyone keeps level-headed and sees to their defensive responsibilities first and then attacking responsibilities second. It's not shock either than when Evans isn't in the team we do well defensively, he can be a decent CB and is a good squad player but he can be such a liability at times.
