If Only?

If Only?

I`m probably not the only person who had dreams of making it as a professional footballer.

In my youth I was a more than competent goalkeeper representing my school at various levels.

Sadly, the lure of an evening paper round ended any thoughts of progressing any further. The prospect of a few quid in my pocket, on a weekly basis, ended any long term plans to hit the big time and find myself on the cover of Shoot or Goal magazines.

It`s only now that I`m past the age whereby I could have a career in football that I often sit back and reminisce about what might have been.

I look around at the huge sums the players of today earn and wonder, even more so when you take the case of Phil Jones.

Noticed playing for Blackburn, the teenager has had a meteoric rise to the top.

On June 13th he signed for Manchester United, on October 7th he made his England debut and according to one tabloid, he took delivery of an Aston Martin worth a cool £130,000 yesterday.

Now if only I`d persevered and ignored the lure of that aforementioned paper round I might be sitting looking at a flash motor outside my window instead of a battered old Vauxhall Astra!

Isn't De Gea still statistically the best keeper in the league? Oh no let me guess you lap up the drivel the media prints right?
