As much as I admire Rio Ferdinand and in particular all the outstanding displays he has given during his tenure at Old Trafford, I`m in agreement with Sir Alex Ferguson when the gaffer hints that he may not be the player he once was.
Therefore, accepting that fact, I`m finding it hard to accept that, at international level, Fabio Capello still sees Rio as an essential part of the England squad for the Euro 2012 finals next summer.
Although Rio wasn`t selected for the two forthcoming international friendly fixtures against Spain and Sweden, with Fabio reportedly phoning Rio to explain why with the emphasis being on playing youth this time around, would it be considered churlish to infer that Fabio, as he heads into his final few months as the England coach, is falling into the trap whereby he`ll place his trust, and hopes of winning the trophy next summer, on the crop of golden oldies that have repeatedly let us down and haven`t got any younger?
