Rio not first choice - Fergie (AUDIO)

Former England captain Rio Ferdinand is no longer guaranteed to start for Manchester United according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The surprising revelation comes ahead of the Champions League match against FC Otelul Galati at Old Trafford, a game which Ferdinand will play, Fergie believes the 33-year old, who also lost the Old Trafford captaincy last season due to injury, is suffering the effects of his seniority, admitting he's lost a yard of pace in recent seasons.

With a strong base at centre half, including the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Ferguson is hoping his veteran defender, now in his 10th season at the Premier League champions, will be able to adapt and help out in other ways.

you have to see this as Rio's last season for United.

Heard it before yet he still got selected over Jones and Vidic. At his age he's understandably not going to be the player he use to be but him being a liability comes more down to poor form than him losing it. His got to remain at the club, he's great to have around and teach the youngsters as well as give them advice on how to handle different opposition stikers. With his age and the fact that we've got one defender less than last season I do think we should sign another CB, my personal preference being Cahill. He's young, cheap and quite reliable. I'd also like to see us sign another LB, perhaps follow up our previous interest in Izaguirre, he looks like a great LB and is definately too good for the SPL. He can provide great cover and also challenge Evra as well as give Fabio the time he needs to develop rather than having the pressure of being thrown into the deep end.
