'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Right Time - Wrong Place?

Now I`m a great fan of Phil Jones and I reckon we landed a bargain when we signed him from Blackburn Rovers.

In fact you might recall I`ve run several articles praising the youngster.

One thing that I believe has made him such a great acquisition is his versatility.

Jones has already shown he can play at the heart of the defence and that he can also slot into the midfield, however, after last night, I have my doubts that he is destined to be a world-class right back.

Given his England debut, by Fabio Capello, Jones started at right-back and although he did a decent enough job, that swagger we associate with the youngster when playing at centre-back wasn`t quite there.

In fact, at times, his rawness when it came to playing regularly in that position made him look an average player and we all know that is something Phil is not.

So although Phil will, no doubt, be please dot have gained that first international cap and that he was glad to have been part of the England side that assured qualification for the Euro 2012 Finals was achieved, deep down I reckon he`d rather have been playing at centre-back although I`d hasten to add that the lad is too modest to admit as much.

Jones should've never played at RB, especially when there's natural RB's in the squad. He has been in remarkable form at club level playing at CB playing only once at RB v Bolton. Surely it's common sense to play players where they're most comfortable and if Capello wanted to play Jones it should've been at CB over either one of Cahill (who was decent on the night) or Terry (who was awful on the night - no doubt in my mind that Jones would've done better at CB than him) with a Richards, Walker, Johnson, Kelly or someone at RB.
