Praise for Owen

Praise for Owen

Given a one year contract back in the summer, Michael Owen got his first start in a United shirt last night.

Still only thirty-one years of age, Owen showed that he still has the predatory instincts that have served him so well all his career by netting a brace at Elland Road.

Following the 3-0 cruise, Sir Alex Ferguson had nothing but praise for Owen, commenting after the game,

"Michael is still fantastic when it comes to putting the ball in the net. I`m very pleased for him that he`s got another couple tonight."

"When you look at his goal ratio throughout his career it is magnificent. And, yes, he is absolutely still one of the best finishers in England."

"Because of the form of the other strikers we have here, Michael is not getting the amount of games he deserves right now, and that is unfortunate for him."

"But he is a great person to have around."

Although Owen, at the start of the season, was promised more games, the emergence of Welbeck to join Rooney, Hernandez and Berbatov as the main strikers at Old Trafford may very well mean that Owen`s appearances are restricted to the domestic cup competitions.

Owen's attitude since joining has been impeccable. His always putting in a good performance when called upon and doesn't kick up a fuss if he doesn't get selected. He's helping the youngsters develop their game and I bet he'll even admit his game has come along a bit since joining and playing with Scholes and Giggs. All that for free, you can't complain.
