'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Carrick Will Grow As A Player

Frank Lampard senior, who coached Michael Carrick at West Ham, says he will grow as a player at Manchester United.

Carrick, who is on the verge of a £18.7million move to Old Trafford as he has apparently passed his medical, should be unveiled in red any day soon.

Lampard told BBC Sport:

'No disrespect to Spurs but he will have to push himself at United because he's stepping up a level and there will be demands on him all the time. When you're training with world-class players every day, you learn from them. If you have got the capabilities - which Michael certainly has - then you adapt and lift your level.'

He also says that he will become 'more of an all-round player.' Adding 'He might be asked to get forward more and score goals, or become more of a ball winner. Having worked closely with him, I know he's capable of doing that. It was clear from the first time I saw Michael train that he was a rare talent. The main thing that struck me about him was he always looked like he had time on the ball. That might not sound like much, but it's something only a few players have.'

Carrick is quality and will become a world class player. I think you've overpaid but he will prove his value in the long run. The trouble is that do Man Utd have the time needed to build with Chelsea's finances able to finance a re-structuring in one season if necessary? I read in The Sun (I know...) that after sponsorship etc Abramovich has 'only' lost £53m on Chelsea which is nothing to him (a years interest in his bank account) - meaning that they have plenty more left to spen if required.

18.7 million for a player who cost spurs just over 2 million, i bet they are laughing all the way to the bank!

I think in this day 18.7 for an England squad player at 25 is a good price

Carrick is class make no mistake but this is just fantastic business for Spurs! We can rebuild the weaker areas of our team without touching a penny of our own money! As for replacing MC as many have already said we have at least 3 players that can do that already! Thanks Man U - enjoy him!
